Dubuque stabbing: More details on cause and victims

DUBUQUE (KWWL) -- Two brothers are in jail charged with crimes connected to a stabbing in Dubuque Monday afternoon, but there are still no charges related to the 24-year-old who died in the fight.

Court documents show many of the events leading up to the afternoon stabbing and the criminal background of Jermaris West, the man killed.

18-year-old Jerel Wright is charged with attempted murder. His brother 20-year-old Joseph Wright is charged with assault and carrying a concealed weapon.

Police say Jerel Wright stabbed 23-year-old Derrick Tye in the head and upper back. Wright told police Tye confronted him early Monday morning about sleeping with his girlfriend. Later in the day. Wright said he confronted Tye and began fighting.

The affidavit states: "Jerel asked investigators if Tye was dead. When investigators replied that they did not know Tye's condition, Jerel stated, 'I tried to kill that [expletive deleted]'."

Police say Tye is West's cousin. On Monday, West's mother told KWWL West had tried to break up a fight between his cousin and another man early in the morning. She said he was stabbed to death in retaliation.

Tye was taken to Finley Hospital and was treated and released. Police say during the fight 20-year-old Joseph Wright threatened 20-year-old Danielle Whitehead with a knife.

"Whitehead said that Jo-Jo [Joseph] drove up to her on a bicycle and showed her a knife that was concealed in his waistline. He then pulled a knife out and said, 'run up to me [expletive deleted] and I'll poke you," according to the affidavit.

Police say more charges are likely coming, possibly for the Wrights.

"We've already established their direct involvement and again, the interviews are shedding more and more light on their level of involvement. It's very possible that additional charges could be filed against one or both of the Wright brothers," Lt. Scott Baxter said.

No charges have been filed regarding the stabbing death. Jermaris West was the 24-year-old killed in the stabbing. He has several priors. In January, police say west sold crack cocaine to someone during a sting. In a search, they recovered more than 32 grams of crack cocaine (among other things). In July, he was sentenced to one year in a residential facility, ten years in prison, and fines.

The Wright brothers appeared in court Tuesday. Jerel is being held on $50,000 cash bond for the attempted murder charge. Joseph is held on a $6,500 bond for the weapons charges.

We now have the identities of the two other victims. 50 year-old Willie Jones had blunt force injuries and 28-year-old Romaine Wheeler had minor stab wounds. He did not go to the hospital by choice.

Police say there has been no significant retaliation or problems in the neighborhood since the Monday afternoon stabbing. They are continuing to patrol the area.
