Obama speech focuses on the future for students

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- A presidential speech meant to inspire kids has been met with controversy.

Tuesday President Barack Obama addressing students through a special televised speech, which some school districts chose not to have their students watch.

Some parents don't like the idea of their children listening to a speech that may be politically charged, but Tuesday's speech was far from that more about encouraging students to do their best everyday.

At the Dr. Walter Cunningham School for excellence it was up to individual teachers to decide if they wanted their students to view the presidents speech.

5th grade teacher Shayla Stevenson decided she wanted her students to hear from a man they have grown to admire.

"The message was excellent just letting kids know whether you face challenges or not you still.  There are still certain things that are expected from you no matter what.  I thought the speech was wonderful, " said Stevenson.

While some thought the President's speech maybe politcally motivated, the students who saw it didn't come to that conclusion.

To give this some perspective, Presidents in the past have made similar speeches.

George H.W. Bush addressed students back in 1991.  Ronald Reagan gave a speech to students in 1988.
