Grace named MVFC Offensive Player of the Week

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- University of Northern Iowa senior quarterback Pat Grace has been named the Missouri Valley Football Conference's Co-Offensive Player of the Week.

Grace (Sioux City, Iowa/Heelan HS) passed for a career-high 270 yards and nearly led UNI to an upset over No. 21-ranked Iowa. Grace completed 23-of-37 passes and a score against the Hawkeyes.

Grace tossed a 14-yard touchdown pass to Ryan Mahaffey to give the Panthers a 10-3 lead in the second quarter. Grace also completed a 50-yard strike to Jarred Herring to set up a third quarter field goal.

With the Panthers trailing 17-13, Grace guided his squad on a 12-play, 46-yard drive that resulted in a field goal with 4:26 left in the game. Grace then engineered an 11-play, 68-yard drive in the final two minutes which ended with a pair of field goal attempts to close the game.

Grace will share this week's offensive honor with Western Illinois quarterback Matt Barr. Barr threw for 437 yards in the season-opening win at Sam Houston State. He completed 18-of-26 passes for three touchdowns in the win. It marks just the 19th time in league history that a QB had thrown for 400+ yards. It ranks eighth-best in league history for a single game and second-best all-time for Western.

Southern Illinois linebacker Brandin Jordan garnered the league's defensive player of the week honor, while the Salukis' punter Scott Ravanesi was tabbed the special teams player of the week.
