"Fill the Boot" Continues Monday

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Firefighters around the nation have been out on the streets during Labor Day weekend, asking passing traffic to fill their boot by giving a money donation.

The "Fill the Boot for Jerry's Kids" campaign raises money for the Muscular Dystrophy Association.

The National Association of Firefighters has had the annual "Fill the Boot" fundraiser since the 1950's.

The money goes to the MDA, where it's used on anything from wheelchairs to sending kids to camp.

Last year Waterloo raised $25,000.

"We are the second highest fundraiser in the state only behind Cedar Rapids.  So everyone's been really generous.  We've raised more money last year than Des Moines or Lincoln, Nebraska or Kansas City, Kansas," Waterloo Fire Fighter Sam Hess.

On Friday alone, Waterloo raised $10,000.  The fundraising will continue Monday.
