Safety City in Cedar Falls

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- Kids learned all about safety this past week in Cedar Falls.  Safety City started in 1968.  This year it ran Aug. 30 - Sept. 4.  It's a chance for children to interact with emergency responders to reduce fears during times of need.

The week long event drew nearly 500 students from area schools.  There was a fire truck, ambulance, police car, fingerprinting station, electrical wire demonstration, and even a 911 simulator.

"A couple years ago there was an emergency where a child called 911. Actually remembered how to call 911 from what they learned at Safety City," Cedar Falls Police Officer Mike Leary said.

Floods destroyed the previous location for safety city, which was the boat house along the Cedar River in Cedar Falls.  This year, it was held in the parking lot of the Target Distribution Center, with employees helping out with the fingerprinting.
