Dubuque businesses compliant with Smokfree Air Act

DUBUQUE (KWWL) - Dubuque businesses fall right in line with state numbers regarding the Smokefree Air Act.  According to a new report just released by the Iowa Department of Public Health, compliance with the Smokefree Air Act was high during its first full year.  The law took effect July 1, 2008.  Since then only about 1 percent of businessses recieved a notice of potential violation.

In a press release to KWWL Kara Schroeder, Anti-Tobacco Coordinator for Hillcrest Family Services, said, "It's just awesome to see that the community is stepping up and taking measures to comply. The damage that secondhand smoke does to others is dramatic. This is a step in the right direction."

In Dubuque County, 2783 businesses are subject to the law. Only 1.1 percent of businesses received a notice of potential violation from IDPH.
