Iowa a leader in using stimulus dollars

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- A congressional committee says Iowa is only behind Wyoming in the percentage of federal stimulus dollars it has allocated for highway and bridge projects.

According to the U.S House Transportation and Infrastructure Committee reported Wednesday that 85 percent of the federal money granted to Iowa has already been awarded to contractors, with 75 percent of the work underway.

Under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, $358 million has been allocated to Iowa for highway and bridge infrastructure projects. State officials say the money for the most part is being used to rehabilitate highway pavement and renovating bridges.

Scott Newhard of the Associated General Contractors of Iowa says the federal stimulus program has meant a lot of people are working at good-paying jobs that wouldn't exist otherwise.
