Democrat wins narrow victory in SE Iowa House race

Posted:

FAIRFIELD (AP)--Voters in southeast Iowa have narrowly elected Democrat Curt Hanson, a retired teacher from Fairfield, in a special state House race.

Hanson beat Republican Stephen Burgmeier, a three-term county supervisor and farmer, by a vote of 3,932 to 3,825 in the House District 90 race on Tuesday.

The seat became available when Democratic Rep. John Whitaker resigned to take a job as the U.S. Department of Agriculture's farm service administrator in Iowa.

The two political parties had poured more than $300,000 into the race, make of it for advertising.

The election gives Democrats 56 seats in the House. Republicans hold 44 seats.
