Dose of truth for Iowa parents in teen drug abuse

DES MOINES (KWWL) -- Abuse of prescription and over the counter drugs is on the rise among Iowa teenagers.  A new online campaign aims to change that.

"Take a Dose of Truth" is a partnership between the Iowa Governors Office of Drug Control Policy, and the Partnership for a Drug-Free Iowa.  The 2008 Iowa Youth Study found seven percent of Iowa 11-th graders said they had misused prescription drugs in the previous 30 days.

"It gives 'em some tips on how to strike up that conversation and re-emphasizes the importance of having these conversations with your kids because they really do listen even if you think your kids aren't listening to you. Studies show kids are about 50-percent more likely to not use if they have those conversations with their parents," Iowa Governors Office of Drug Control Policy director Gary Kendell said. has information for parents with kids of all ages.  It's funded by a grant secured by Senator Tom Harkin.
