Big employers growing confidence in economy

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- A survey of Iowa Business Council members shows there is growing confidence among the state's largest employers about the economy improving.

However, the survey released Tuesday also indicates the employers' outlook remain negative.

The index compiled from the survey hit 48.7 in the third quarter, the second quarter of improvement. A score below 50 means sentiment about the economy over the next six months is negative. The survey also showed the six-month outlook on sales also improved.

In the second quarter, the Economic Outlook Survey Index had inched to 38.3 after tumbling to 35.3 in first quarter. A year ago, the index was at 63.3.

Mel Haught of window and door maker Pella Corp. says it is encouraging to see each economic activity indicator move higher for the second consecutive quarter.
