Iowa to review more suspicious child injuries

DES MOINES (KWWL) - The Iowa Department of Human Services says more suspicious injuries to children will be reviewed by a paid team of medical professional to try and stop preventable abuse.

Agency Director Charles Krogmeier says the teams will review instances where there is a disagreement over the cause of the child's injuries.

Krogmeier, in a letter on Monday to Gov. Chet Culver, says a recent review of child-abuse regulations showed differing medical opinions may prevent the agency from taking action to protect children.

The case of a Des Moines infant injured in June has raised questions among lawmakers and others in the child-welfare system over whether professionals have responded appropriately to signs before serious injuries or deaths from abuse.
