CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) A Fallen Soldier Memorial sculpture now sits at the West Gym of UNI. It was dedicated in honor of 2nd Lieutenant Richard "Brian" Gienau of the U.S. Army and a former cadet with the UNI ROTC.

Gienau was killed in Iraq February 25, 2005.

"It was an honor to be part of the thing. It's a four by four stainless steel resembling dog tags with two sides similar to the sides of a coin," said sculptor Will Overstreet.

One side represents student life at UNI with paw prints symbolizing the legacy an ROTC Cadet leaves on campus. The other side is more of the soldier life with boot prints. In the center, a silhouette of Gienau.

"It's touching when you understand what each little piece means, and as a whole it's an amazing sculpture," said Cadet Ryan Schulte.

"What I tried to do was to create something not too abstract or intrusive. Something that could be read by the public and understood," said Overstreet.

"It's very important to recognize those that have come before us. especially those that have given the ulitmate sacrifice in Iraq, Afghanistan and past wars," said Schulte.

Members of Gienau's family attended the dedication ceremony, including his son.
