WAVERLY (KWWL) -- Last year Decorah opened the 2008 season with a 27-7 victory over Waverly-Shell Rock. The Vikings would win 13 in a row on their way to the 3-a state championship game where Decorah lost to Sioux City Heelan in the finals.
Waverly-Shell Rock only won 3 games last year, but the Go Hawks who return 21 lettermen have high hopes for 2009. Decorah also expects to be pretty good with 20 lettermen back.
The Go-hawks trying to sink the Vikings and get some revenge but it was the Vikings who struck first on an 8 yard pass from Lucas Kane to Chris Wanless on 4th and 5 to keep the drive alive.
Then on the 14th play of the drive Collin White barrels it home from 7 yards out dive took 9 minutes and 15 seconds, but it was no good.
On the Go-hawks ensuing posession Brandon Steggall coughs it up and the Vikings recover. But Brandon Hoefer had other things in mind when he sacked Kane for an 11 yard loss and the drive would stall.
After a Go-hawk 3 and out, Kane had a nice pitch to Robby Jewell for 14 and that would set up redemption for Cody Sacquitne from 31 yard out.
On the very next play of the Go-hawks offensive possession Larson throws it up and Brock Arend comes down with it. Only problem is that it's the wrong team.
Then it's Sacquitne again this time from 41 with plenty of leg and the Vikings would scrap by with a 12-7 victory.
