Falcons fly again; A-P's first game

PARKERSBURG (KWWL) -- The national spotlight is once again focused on the community of Aplington & Parkersburg.  ESPN is broadcasting the Falcons' home opener against rival Dike-New Hartford nationally, as a tribute to Coach Ed Thomas.  To say the game is emotional, would be an understatement.

It is the first time in more than three decades that Ed Thomas is not leading his boys out onto the field.

Preparations for the broadcast began weeks ago when ESPN announced they would be carrying this game live.  Friday afternoon, field crews put the finishing touches on the sacred acre, painting the lines and end zones.  School officials are using this game as a chance to show values of Ed Thomas to a national audience.

"All the values he stood for and helping our young athletes become better people I think is evident every day here at A-P," Superintendent Jon Thompson said.  "This gives us a chance to showcase it around the state, and even the united states."

Before the game, every one of Ed Thomas's former players formed a tunnel at the end of the field, to show their support for this team.  There was not be a small crowd, as Thomas taught two generations of people - fathers and sons.
