Benton County cemetery vandalism costing thousands

BENTON COUNTY (KWWL) --A rural cemetery was vandalized this week and will cost thousands to repair.

Parkers Grove Cemetery Association Board member Earl Dickinson discovered that the vandalism yesterday.

"I think they did it in the rain and I think they just pushed them over and I don't think one person could do this.  I think it was a joint effort.  They went around and they kind of did it to flimsier looking tall stones," said Dickinson.

More than 2 dozen tombstones had been pushed over and broke-- some of the tombstones were more than 150 years old.

To repair the damage, it will cost a minimum of 2 hundred dollars per tombstone.  But some may need to be replaced, which costs about 6 thousand dollars per stone.

This was not the first time the cemetery was vandalized, but this was worse than the previous pranks years ago.

"It's kind of sacrilegious when you have relatives buried in the cemetery and people going in and having such little respect for the dead," said Dickinson.

Parkers Grove Cemetery Association hopes to seek help with repairs through graveyard reparation programs.

The vandals were not caught.
