Iowa man possible drowning victim in Minnesota

EAGAN, Minn. (KWWL/KARE) Thick weeds are making search efforts for an Iowa canoeist in Minnesota more difficult.

The 23-year-old man from Iowa went missing Wednesday night after heading out on a pond in Eagan Minnesota. Residents in the area heard cries for help at around 10:30 p.m.

Authorities found the capsized canoe the man had been paddling. On Thursday, recovery crews searched the pond, turning up nothing but weeds from the bottom. At this point, it is not clear if he was wearing a life jacket.

A Minnesota State Patrol helicopter surveyed the water by air on Thursday.

The people who live around the pond say they're shocked by what happened.

"First of all I'm shocked there's so much weeds in there because we lived here 32 years, my wife and I and the two kids and the half the neighborhood swam right there and now somebody drowns right there in the weeds, so it's not good," says Lyle Hetznecker.

The 23-year-old paddler is described as a good swimmer. He was in town to visit family.
