Judge sets hearing for alleged coach shooter

IOWA CITY (AP) -- A U.S. District Court judge has set a mental competency hearing for a man charged with killing an Iowa high school football coach.

Judge Stephen Carroll set the hearing for Mark Becker for Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. in Mason City. Carroll also approved the prosecution's request for a psychological evaluation of Becker.

Becker faces first-degree murder charges in the shooting death of Aplington-Parkersburg coach Ed Thomas.

On Tuesday, Becker's lawyer filed documents stating that a psychological evaluation found Becker was not competent to stand trial.

Prosecutors have scheduled another evaluation for Friday in Des Moines.

Becker's trial is scheduled for Sept. 15 in Butler County.
