Embezzlement investigation in school district

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) -- A Cedar Rapids school district employee is being investigated for embezzlement by the Cedar Rapids police department.

Cedar Rapids police say they've charged Jamie May with first degree theft.  May's suspected of embezzling $250,000.

According to the district, it immediately conducted an internal investigation and placed the employee on administrative leave. The district also contacted the State Auditor's office.

The district says the State Auditor's office is expected to conduct an independent investigation and provide it with recommendations on ways to improve internal controls.  The state Auditor's investigation is likely to take several months, with a final report issued as late as next year.  In the mean time, the district says it will work closely with its auditing firm to identify what they can do right away to prevent this from happening again.

According to the district, the embezzlement loss will be covered by its insurance.
