Prosecution asks for separate evaluation in Becker case

Posted:

BUTLER COUNTY (KWWL) -- Just one day after an attorney filed an application with the court regarding Mark Becker's mental state, the prosecution is asking for a separate evaluation.

According to Dr. Dan Rogers, Becker has trouble distinguishing reality from fantasy and suffers from hallucinations. The defense says Becker would not be able to understand the charges against him or aid in his defense.

On Wednesday, the prosecution filed a request to have Becker examined by their own doctor. They've also asked for a competency hearing to be set for Sept. 8 or 9.

Becker is charged with 1st degree murder in the shooting death of legendary Aplington-Parkersburg football coach Ed Thomas. Becker's trial was set to start Sept. 15.
