Today's Sweet Tooth: Bochner Chocolates in Iowa City

IOWA CITY (KWWL) Interesting and different ingredients but not weird. That's how Eric Bochner describes Bochner Chocolates.

The company's production facility is located in Iowa City. Owner Eric Bochner located in Iowa City after going to pastry school in Chicago.

Starting up in 2003, Bochner Chocolates obviously focuses on chocolate.

"Chocolate bars. Chocolate filled pieces. We make caramel," said Bochner.

Bochner Chocolates has a retail store in Coralville and an outlet store called "Chocolate Block" near the production facility in Iowa City.

"We were making a lot of products that they taste fine, they are fine, but they may not look quite right like broken bars. So we now sell those products at a significant discount," said Bochner.

Bochner said despite his job, he's not a chocaholic.

"The joke people don't really know is I actually as a kid hated chocolate. It was only when I found really good chocolate when I was traveling in Europe for business that I was able to taste what really good chocolate tasted like," said Bochner.

Last year the chocolate company was impacted by the flood. No water got inside the facility, but all the equipment was taken apart and moved just to be safe.

"Having to dismantle all our equipment we were out business for two months," he said.

Bochner said going at full-speed, his four production lines can produce about four million pounds of product a year. But depending on the time of year, not all the lines are going and not all at full speed.

Bochner just got some equipment in from Germany to make wrapped caramels, and he says a new website will be done soon.
