Mitchell 5 away from 300 win milestone

Posted:

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) -- "Lot of bus rides, lot of bus rides"

That's how Pat Mitchell describes 42 years of coaching.  So far, those rides have produced 295 wins, 5 short of a milestone that really has little meaning for the longtime Tiger coach.

"I'm only interested in the next one," admits coach Mitchell, "Numbers really mean nothing.  Truly, they mean nothing."

While the number may not be impressive to himself, the same can't be said for his peers like West High head coach Lonnie Moore, who will be going for his first career victory this coming Friday night.

"That's a great accomplishment," says coach Moore, "I can only wish I get that many.  That's a goal for me.  He's done a great job over there at Cedar Falls."

During the course of that job, Mitchell's had some great experiences, including taking the 1986 Tigers to a state championship.  However, it's not just those types of accomplishments that keep this Tiger going.

"The real fun of football is to take a bunch of guys, you have no idea what's going to happen, and see if you can put thme together and make sure they have a good experience," says Mitchell, "Hopefully it will happen again."

That starts next week for this year's team at Cedar Rapids Washington, as they give Coach Mitch a shot at win #296.
