Regents want Universities to stop getting sports funding from state

Posted:
WATERLOO (KWWL) -- The chairman of the Iowa Board of Regents says athletic departments at the state's universities should be weaned from taxpayer money.

Athletic departments at Iowa State and the University of Northern Iowa still receive general fund money, while the University of Iowa stopped during the 2007-2008 year. That same year the Big Ten established it's own television network -- which provides about 7 million dollars a year to the university.

Chairman David Miles says the Regents believe taxpayer money can be used more effectively during tough economic times.
