Injury bug bites Hawkeyes

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- A few thousand Hawkeye fans got a firsthand look at the new Kinnick turf as well as the new Hawkeyes on that turf Saturday afternoon.

The big story wasn't who was there, but who wasn't.  Running back Jewel Hampton was absent after re-aggravating an injury from the offseason,  while All-Big Ten offensive lineman Bryan Bulaga also suffered an injury this week.

Coach Kirk Ferentz called both injuries minor, but could not say for sure whether or not Hampton would be able to play in the season opener versus UNI.

The big hit this week for the hawks, however, was losing defensive back Jordan Bernstine to a season ending ankle injury.

"The only major injury we've had is Jordan's," says Ferentz, "which was really unfortunate and ironic.  It was a non-contact injury.  He was just trying to decelerate and cover a punt and dislocated that."

Ferentz says he expects good competition for the vacated defensive spot while the hawks likely will go with the next 3 running backs on the depth chart if Hampton isn't available on opening day.
