Iowa City parents discuss abuse

IOWA CITY (AP) -- Dozens of Iowa City parents turned out for a discussion on sexual abuse prompted by the arrest of a former school guidance counselor.

Officials of the Iowa City School District, along with the Rape Victim Advocacy Program and two other area agencies, met with parents late Thursday.

District Superintendent Lane Plugge says the district have been reviewing how school counselors work with students. That includes how staff members meet with students one-on-one behind closed doors.

Karla Miller of the Rape Victim Advocacy Program said parents must teach their children to not necessarily trust everyone who is in authority, and how to say no to unwelcome touching.

Donald Lyle Clark of Coralville has been charged with second-degree sexual abuse for allegedly molesting an 11-year-old boy while serving as a elementary school guidance counselor.
