New treatment suggested for Osteoporosis

An advisory panel to the Food and Drug Administration has suggested the agency should approve a new treatment for osteoporosis.

The FDA Advisory Committee voted to approve Denosumab as a treatment for osteoporosis, but it did not fully support approving the drug to prevent the disease in women at risk.

They also voted against approving the drug for patients with breast or prostate cancer, whose treatment reduces their bone mass.  The FDA is expected to make a decision on the drug in october.

Denosumab is an injection given to women twice a year, which could benefit those who can't tolerate daily medication and its side effects.
