Local company fixin' turkey legs for Iowa State Fair

LA PORTE CITY (KWWL) - Last minute preparations are under way for the state's largest tourism event...the Iowa State Fair which kicks off Thursday. And one eastern Iowa business is largely responsible for making sure fair-goers have plenty to eat.

Kramer Sausage Company in La Porte City is swamped curing and smoking more than 35,000 pounds worth of turkey legs -- certainly, a state fair staple. The turkey legs are then boxed up, shipped to the fairgrounds in Des Doines, then reheated and sold at the Iowa Turkey Federation stand.

The small La Porte City business has been smoking turkey legs to be served up at the Iowa State Fair for more than 25 years now.

The Iowa State Fair attracts more than one million visitors every year. Kramer family members say they're just happy to be a part of such a proud tradition.
