Iowa faculty sexual misconduct policy formulated

IOWA CITY, Iowa (KWWL) -- Officials at the University of Iowa are drafting new rules to address sexual misconduct offenses by faculty and staff.

Law professor Jonathan Carlson says revisions are being made to the university's sexual harassment policy to make certain it is consistent with legal requirements and best practices. A new student sexual misconduct policy was approved by the Iowa state Board of Regents in December.

The new policies are in response to an alleged sexual assault of a female student. Also last fall, two faculty members were accused of sexual misconduct toward students. The faculty members, Arthur Miller and Mark Weiger, both committed suicide.

Faculty Senate President David Drake said Iowa faculty welcomes the effort, saying it will result in the best policy for faculty, staff and students in the U.S.
