Owner dumps dead dogs in Cedar Lake

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - Cedar Rapids Police say a dog owner disposed of four dead dogs in the Cedar Lake.

Cedar Rapids Animal Control found the dead dogs on the bike/jogging trail at Cedar Lake Monday night. Four bags held the remains of at least four dogs. They were removed from the shore of Cedar Lake and taken to Animal Control.

After examining the remains, officers say there were no obvious or apparent injuries to the dogs that would cause them to die. There were only four dogs. One appeared to be a boxer, two were possibly pit bulls and one was an unknown breed. There were no tags or owner identifying marks on the dogs, and the animals did not have microchips.

Officers say it appears the dogs were dead prior to being placed in the plastic bags. Although this is an improper place to dispose of dead dogs, no charges will be filed.

Animal Control followed up on tips to find the owner. The owner says the dogs died from illnesses and he disposed of them in Cedar Lake. No charges will be filed at this time.

Cedar Rapids Police say if you have a pet that dies, dispose of it by placing it in a black garbage bag and placing it in your dumpster or take it to the landfill. If it is taken to the landfill, there may be an applicable charge of $5 if brought in by car and in a black plastic bag.
