Iowa City warns of squirrels with rabies

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Officials in Iowa City are warning people to beware of squirrels that may have rabies.

The Iowa City Division of Animal Services impounded a squirrel Saturday in the 3200 block of Raven Street. The animal had been reported by a resident who was attacked and bitten on the foot. An animal service officer observed the animal acting strangely -- acting lethargic one minute and attacking the next. The animal would also randomly seem to fall asleep when eating, then suddenly awake.

This animal was impounded and later tested for rabies at Oakdale Hygienic laboratory where it was found to be positive for Rabies.

Animal Services is asking the public to report any possible contact with this animal and also to report any other wildlife that may be acting unusual. Please contact Animal Services at 319-356-5295 to file reports of concern.
