Shelter set up at high school in Eldora

ELDORA (KWWL)-- The Red Cross has set up an emergency shelter at South Hardin High School following Sunday.

The high school is one of the few areas of town that has power as of Sunday evening.

It's a meeting place for food and information.  The Red Cross has dozens of volunteers on hand all day and night Sunday.

Volunteers say they served more than 50 meals and had some people stay the night on cots.

They are expected to be open Monday as clean-up continues.

Though many people stopped by the shelter, officials say many were able to stay with friends and family.

"There's a lot of debris around, a lot of broken glass, so that's a concern, but because it happened in mid-day, people have been able in many instances to board up, to clean up a bit, to make it safe enough at least to stay in their own home," said Mary Dooley of Iowa Rivers Red Cross.

Eldora had a curfew Sunday night that started at 8 p.m. No one was allowed out and about. Emergency vehicles and power crews worked through the night.

State legislators will be in Eldora Monday to tour damage.  They will speak to reporters at 2:00 p.m.
