OELWEIN (KWWL) -- Oelwein High School senior and color guard member Shelby Schreck is going to New York City in November.
Schreck auditioned and was accepted to the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade All-Star Band.
"We had a few complications because the first tape they got they couldn't get it to play so we had to make another one so that was a little nerve wracking, but we got it in and they liked it and then I got accepted," said Shelby Schreck.
"Shelby's been one of our leaders in the color guard. She's got a bubbly personality. She works hard and is really good with helping out some of our younger students," said instrumental music instructor David Pepin.
Soon, Schreck will get an instructional DVD detailing her Thanksgiving day flag routine.
"We leave November 21 and we're there till the 28th. Everyone already knows the routine, but when we get down there that's when we learn the marching together and learn how to move together," said Schreck.
Until then, Schreck is fundraising.
"My goal is to raise $2,000. You have to pay for it yourself. I'm asking businesses. Any donation will help. I have an account set up at Veridian Credit Union if anyone wants to make a donation."
Schreck is looking forward to sightseeing in New York City. But she's not too excited about the unpredictability of November weather.
"That's one of the hard parts of parade marching is the weather. Rain, wind that all impacts your flag work, but I'm ready for it. I'm up for anything," said Schreck.
The Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade route is three miles. Schreck is going by herself and hopes her friends, bandmates and family back in Oelwein get to see her perform on national television.
