Iowa state parks show spike in use, upkeep wanes

DES MOINES (AP) -- Officials say use is up at some Iowa state parks, despite complaints about a lack of upkeep at campgrounds.

State parks chief Kevin Szcodronski says there has been trouble with maintenance. He says some cash-strapped parks are operating with half their staff members.

Szcodronski says some of the picnic grounds "are looking a little rough." Other complaints from campers include dirty bathrooms and fallen tree branches.

Still, Szcodronski says, use is up at parks statewide. Szcodronski says that's because Iowans are looking for cheap vacations.

At Backbone State Park near Strawberry Point, use was up 32 percent over the first six months of 2007 and up more than 100 percent over last year's season during the floods.
