Iowa business reaping in unexpected benefits from Cash for Clunkers

MARION (KWWL)-- One Iowa business is reaping unexpected benefits from the federal Cash for Clunkers program.

Irontite of Marion uses sodium silicate as a key ingredient in one of the products they manufacture

The government has mandated the engines of the traded-in clunkers be disabled with sodium silicate.

As a result, Irontite has already produced and shipped 10,000 gallons of its product in the last week.

''It's been a boom for business here in the summer where normally things slow down for us, so this has been a welcome increase in business helping keep our people busy,'' said Vice President of Sales for Irontite, Dennis Mullarkey.

One gallon of the solution disables two engines.

Experts predict another half million clunkers may be traded in before the program expires.
