Stanzi's confidence on display at Hawkeye media day

IOWA CITY (KWWL) -- On media day there was no lack of confidence with the Iowa football players.  Some of them even believe they have a great shot to make a BCS bowl this season.  There also seems to be a pretty big shift in some of the attitudes of some of these players, most notably with quarterback Rick Stanzi.  In the previous offseason Stanzi battled Jake Christensen for the starting job and never really had the chance to take charge of the offense in preseason workouts.  That has been a big change this time around.

"As far as Rick Stanzi goes,  he's really kind of boosted the whole team from an offseason standpoint," said receiver Derrell Johnson-Koulianos, "The guy has just worked harder than any player I've been around since I've been playing football."

Head coach Kirk Ferentz agrees.  "He's really changed his demeanor a little bit.  It was never bad, don't get me wrong, but I think he's really realized now it's a little bigger than just playing quarterback and just doing his job.  Which is where it all starts but I think right now he's anxious to help assume some of that leadership role that we need to have."

For Stanzi, that means taking charge even before the team shows up for camp.  "You can't just come in to camp and start working on timing and stuff.  You've got to realize we've got to put those kind of minutes and hours in the offseason, and that's going to help us hopefully throughout camp and the season."
