Shooting angers people in Iowa City neighborhood

by Bryan Goettel

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - It turned into a long, sleepless night for those living along Lakeside Drive and Regal Lane.

They've noticed violence increasing in the past few months, but two rounds of shootings Wednesday night sent things to a whole new level.

It was quiet Thursday in the Southeast Iowa City neighborhood. But that's a far cry from what people witnessed late Wednesday night.

"We heard kids yelling, screaming, raising hell," witness Ray Davies said.

Davies was inside his house on Regal Lane when he saw two groups of about twenty kids each squaring off on the street.

He says he heard one gunshot around 10:30, called police and heard several more about a half hour later.

When Davies was asked if he'd ever seen anything like it in his 38 years living in the neighborhood, he said, "Never.  It makes me angry. I'm not concerned. We live here and this is our neighborhood and we need to take it back."

Davies' next door neighbor has been in the area for 37 years. She said she doesn't want to move, but things keep getting worse, she won't have much choice.

Davies believes police are doing their best and it's going to take groups getting together to make a difference.

"This just has to stop one way or the other," Davies said. "Hopefully it's before somebody gets killed, either one of the kids or one of the citizens."

A woman who lives and runs a daycare out of her home on nearby Lakeside Drive said she saw the second shooting unfold from her window.

She's lived there for 16 years and couldn't believe what she saw, describing the whole experience as unnerving.

A teenage boy was shot in the arm, but police have been unable to find the victim or the suspect.
