King supports Lewis and Clark

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (AP) -- Republican Congressman Steve King of northwest Iowa says he thinks the Lewis and Clark Regional Water System is worthy of federal funding.

King toured the site of the water treatment plant north of Vermillion in southeastern South Dakota. He says the three-state project can't be done by cities or states, so that makes it a federal project.

The $537 million Lewis and Clark project plans to send treated water from wells near the Missouri River through 337 miles of underground pipe to more than 200,000 people in southeast South Dakota, northwest Iowa and southwest Minnesota.

Executive Director Troy Larson says funding for the project has always been a "feast or famine type battle." The project is set to get $16 million from the federal government next year.
