Waterloo (KWWL) - A healthy diet is important at any age, but as a person ages, a good diet is essential to remain healthy and reduce the risk of osteoporosis, high blood pressure, heart disease and certain cancers.

Hawkeye Valley Area Agency on Aging will be hosting "Nutrition in Later Years" presented by Dr. Hattie Middleton, RD, Professor Emerita from the University of Northern Iowa. Dr. Middleton will present information about why food is needed for a healthy body, compare and contrast major functions of different nutrients, and describe the benefits of physical activity, especially for older persons. Individual nutrition counseling will be available following the presentation upon request.       

The program will be held at the following days and locations:

  • Tuesday, August 11 at 10:30 a.m. at the Grundy Senior Center, 705 F. Avenue, in Grundy Center - 319-824-3843
  • Wednesday, August 12 at 11:30 a.m. at the Toledo Senior Center, 103 S. Church in Toledo - 641-484-3839
  • Thursday, August 13 at 11:30 a.m. at the Waverly Senior Center, 506 E. Bremer in Waverly - 319-352-2463

This information is available to people age 60 and over who are interested in learning more about how nutrition plays a critical role in remaining healthy and independent.  If you are interested in staying for lunch following the presentation, call the appropriate senior center by 9 a.m.  Lunch is available on a contribution basis for people age 60 and over, otherwise the cost is $6 for people under age 60.  This program is made possible through funding from the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA).
