Vikings case halted in Minnesota court

ST. PAUL (KWWL) - Minnesota Vikings linemen Kevin and Pat Williams can play this season unless a federal court gets involved and backs the NFL's bid to suspend them for violating anti-doping rules.

A Minnesota judge agreed Wednesday to put state court proceedings on hold. Judge Gary Larson also says it's doubtful he would hold a trial during the upcoming season.

A U.S. Court of Appeals panel has scheduled an Aug. 18 hearing on the NFL's attempt to have the dispute handled in federal court. Barring a quick trial, the suspension issue won't be sorted out during the season.

The players, who are not related, have not been accused of taking steroids. They tested positive last summer for a banned diuretic that can mask the presence of steroids after taking the weight-loss supplement StarCaps.
