Reid reports progress toward vote on 'clunkers' extension

WASHINGTON (KWWL) - The Senate's top Democrat is reporting some good conversations with his Republican counterpart on an extension of the "cash-for-clunkers" program.

Sen. Harry Reid of Nevada says there's a "significant majority" in the Senate that's ready to move forward with the $2 billion extension.

The program gives car buyers rebates of up to $4,500 for trading in gas-guzzlers for newer, more fuel-efficient models.

The Senate is moving toward its August recess, but Reid says it'll have to stay in session on Friday if members want to make changes to the bill.

The House approved the additional funding before leaving for its own August recess last week.

With the new money, as many as a half-million more Americans would be able to take advantage of the incentives.
