UNI track coach Goepfert resigns after one season

CEDAR FALLS (KWWL) - According to the University of Northern Iowa, Travis Geopfert resigned as head men's and women's track and field and cross country coach to take a position at the University of Arkansas.

Dave Paulsen has been named Interim Head Men's/Women's Cross Country coach at the University of Northern Iowa effective immediately.

"With the start of the cross country season later this month, it is imperative we have a coach in place," UNI Director of Athletics Troy Dannen said. "We are fortunate to have Dave Paulsen currently on staff and willing to step into this position for the 2009 season. He will provide our students the smoothest transition possible. Meanwhile, we will begin the search process for a permanent replacement for Coach Geopfert."

Paulsen was the head cross country and assistant track and field coach at Central College in Pella, Iowa, in 2007 and 2008. At Central, Paulsen coached eight conference champions, including nine national qualifiers, with four athletes earning All-America honors. Prior to Central, Paulsen served as a volunteer coach at UNI for three years. Paulsen also worked as the sport performance coach for the XL Sports Acceleration Program, a joint venture between the University and Cedar Valley Medical Specialists.

The UNI cross country squads will begin the 2009 season Sept. 4 at the Hawkeye Invitational in Iowa City, Iowa.
