City considering inflatable dam to prevent future floods

WAVERLY (KWWL) -- To help prevent flood damage in the future, the city of Waverly is looking to replace the city's concrete dam with an inflatable one. It's a 4.2 million dollar project.

Once complete the city will be able to raise and lower the water level above the dam, protecting most of the city from a 100 year flood. The economic development administration will pay 3.1 million dollars of the project with an additional one-point-one million dollars from a community development block grant.

"The federal government and state feel it's an excellent project which is why they fund it to protect 400 to 500 homes and the downtown business area and keep major transportation routes open as well," said Waverly city administrator Dick Crayne.

The project still has a couple hurdles to go through before any plans are finalized.
