Benton Co. man surrenders after standoff

SHELLSBURG (KWWL) - A man is in custody after a 6 hour stand-off in Benton County.

Police surrounded a home on Harbert Street and 32nd Avenue in Shellsburg beginning around 4:30 Friday.

That's where police say 30-year-old Eugene Condon was in the home with firearms.

Police say Condon was in his home threatening suicide because of financial troubles after losing his job 4 months ago.

He surrendered to police just before 10 p.m. and was taken to a hospital for evaluation.

Eight nearby houses were evacuated as a precaution while negotiators worked to end the standoff.

No-one was hurt.
