Free dogs at Cedar Valley Humane Society

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - With more pups needing good homes than ever before, CVHS is dedicating an entire month to the dogs.

Starting Sunday, the Cedar Valley Humane Society will be giving away dogs for free - hot dogs that is. Due to a surge in the number of dogs available for adoption, CVHS is looking for new ways to bring people out to the shelter. Sunday August 2 and Sunday August 9, visitors can get free hot dogs, chips and pop, plus a chance to meet all the great dogs in need of new homes.

"These dogs are just waiting for the right person to give them a second chance at a good home," said Susan Manson, development director at CVHS. "We're trying to give people a reason to come out to the shelter today, instead of sometime next month or next year."

A combination of last year's flood and the nation's down economy has lead to an increase in dogs finding their way to the shelter. Many are strays, but a growing number are brought in by owners who can no longer afford to care for their pets. As a result, more dogs are spending more time at the shelter.

"We're doing everything we can to spread the word and to entice people to come out to the shelter and give our dogs a chance," said Manson. "We hope that anyone looking for a dog will consider adopting a shelter dog."

CVHS will also be at the Downtown Farmer's Market this Saturday, selling t-shirts and coffee mugs, as well as homemade pet blankets and dog treats. They will also be promoting the shelter's first ‘golf' tournament at the Airport National Waterfall Miniature Golf Course in Cedar Rapids. The mini golf tournament is Saturday, August 8 from 11am to 2pm. All proceeds from the event directly benefit the animals at CVHS. Tee times can be reserved on their website,
