Indicted NJ mayor submits resignation

HOBOKEN, N.J. (AP) -- Another New Jersey mayor snared in a federal corruption sting is stepping down after his arrest.

His lawyer says Hoboken Mayor Peter Cammarano III sent his letter of resignation to the city clerk's office Friday.

The 32-year-old took office just three weeks ago following a runoff election.

Cammarano is accused of accepting $25,000 in bribes in exchange for help on a purported high-rise building project in the city.

Gov. Jon Corzine had praised Cammarano as a rising star in the Democratic Party. After the arrests, the governor said he was outraged by the scale of the alleged corruption.

Secaucus Mayor Dennis Elwell was the first elected official arrested in the sweep to resign.
