USDA takes action against Ames workers

DES MOINES, Iowa (AP) -- Federal officials have taken action against employees at a laboratory complex in Ames who were part of a scheme to use veterinary credentials to purchase low-cost medications for human use.

The US Department of Agriculture confirmed Thursday that a dozen employees had administrative action taken against them ranging from letters of reprimand to removal from their jobs. Two others retired and one resigned.

It wasn't immediately clear what happened to four other employees alleged to have been involved in the scheme to acquire veterinary drugs that would then sold to employees for their personal or family use. None of the drugs were narcotics.

The nation's chief veterinary officer reported in February that the scheme may have gone on for years. He says lab operations were not affected.
