Robbery leaves bank president fuming

CEDAR RAPIDS (KWWL) - When you work in a bank, the threat of a robbery is a reality you face.

The president of First Federal Credit Union is no stranger to dealing with robberies.

But he says he's never dealt with one quite like Thursday's robbery at his downtown Cedar Rapids branch.

"He pointed guns at my employees faces," credit union president Timothy Byers said. "He threatened them. He is a dangerous criminal animal."

When Byers learned his downtown branch was robbed Thursday morning, he could barely contain his emotions.

"People can't come into financial institutions and feel like this can happen to them," Byers said. "These kind of things have to be stopped and the employees have to know that people that do this that they're financial institutions are behind them one trillion percent."

Police say a man walked into the bank just before 9:30 Thursday morning. They say he showed a gun and left with an undisclosed amount of cash.

"My employees have been tremendously shaken by this," Byers said. "Wouldn't any of you that are listening to this broadcast?"

Byers says he'll do whatever it takes to find the man responsible, going so far as to offer a bounty to make sure the robber is caught.

"We have enough money to make sure that whoever you are out there and if you happen to hear me, I have enough money," Byers said. "We are going to make sure that the authorities that your mother will turn you in if nothing else because you are just a walking man right now that is bound for federal prison. Mark my words."

The branch remained closed for the rest of the day after the robbery. But Byers said it will re-open Friday.

The suspect is described as a slender white male, about 6'0" tall.  He was last seen wearing coveralls and a hat with a hood over it.

Anyone with information is asked to call Cedar Rapids Police at 319-286-5495 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-CR-CRIME.
