$850,000 in Recovery to UI

IOWA CITY (KWWL) - Funding is coming to the University of Iowa to conduct biomedical research. 

The funding was secured through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act (ARRA), the Economic Recovery Package.  Harkin chairs the Appropriations subcommittee that funds National Institutes of Health (NIH) research and was able to secure $10.4 billion for medical research across the United States in the ARRA.

"The University of Iowa is leading the way in biomedical research in many areas that are crucial to public health," said Senator Tom Harkin.  "This funding will create jobs while ensuring valuable research can continue." 

Details of the grants are as follows:

$648,648 to investigate Influenza and the role of sialic acid in virulence.
$205,020 to obtain statistics in microbiology, infectious diseases and bioinformatics.
