Some estimates say Iowa could break corn yield records

WATERLOO (KWWL) -- Iowa Farm Bureau officials say farmers are on track to match or break the record for corn crop yield this summer.

Based on USDA estimates the Iowa corn harvest this year could yield between 175 and 185 bushels per acre. According to Farm Bureau, the harvest record is 180 bushels per acre.

Unfortunately, that sort of yeild won't come from some fields in Fayette county. Emergency Management officials say 85 percent of farms in the county were affected by two recent storms. Initial estimates say about 30,000 acres of crops are completely destroyed. The county plans to seek a state disaster declaration that could help bring in some financial assistance.
