Teen pleads guilty in shooting death

SIOUX CITY, Iowa (AP) -- A Sioux City teenager has pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges in connection with the shooting death of a friend last summer.

Seventeen-year-old Codie Kapaun was sentenced Monday in Woodbury County District Court to five years in prison immediately after entering the guilty plea.

Police say Kapaun and 16-year-old Blanchard were hanging out on Aug. 11, 2008, when Kapaun pointed a .38 caliber handgun at Blanchard and fired.

Blanchard was hit in the head. He died the next day.

Court records show Kapaun told investigators that she thought the gun was empty, or that the safety was on.
