Kernels get back in win column

CEDAR RAPIDS-The Cedar Rapids Kernels snapped two losing streaks on Sunday afternoon in front of 2,478 fans at Perfect Game Field at Veterans Memorial Stadium with a 2-1 win over the South Bend Silver Hawks. The first - a four game losing streak as the Kernels were 4-6 in their last 10 games. The second - the first win against South Bend, who had defeated the Kernels in the previous four meetings.

Kernels starter Manuel Flores (7-4) allowed one run on six hits over eight innings for the win and Nick Pugliese retired the Silver Hawks in order in the ninth for his first save as a Kernel. Tyson Auer drove in the Kernels two runs with a bases-loaded single in the fifth inning and Dwayne Bailey went 2-3 with a stolen base and run scored.

South Bend starter Taylor Sinclair (3-4), a former UNI pitcher, held the Kernels to two runs on seven hits over six innings. Victor Esteves went 2-4 with a solo HR in the third inning and Jake Elmore went 2-3.

The rubber match between the Kernels and Silver Hawks is set for Monday night at 6:35 pm. A lucky Kernels fan could win one million dollars on Million Dollar Monday, presented by Perfect Game USA and the Kernels.

If a single Kernels pitcher throws a perfect game, one fan age 18 and older, will win one million dollars. A fan will win $50,000 for a combined perfect game, and there's a chance every inning to win $10,000 if the Kernels perform a particular feat each inning such as hitting for the cycle as a team, or striking out the side on nine pitches.
